Fishing is one of humanity’s oldest pursuits, but too often our fisheries data systems are mired in the past. With better and more accessible data, we can respond to shifting fish stocks and other climate-related ocean changes and imagine and implement a sustainable future for America’s fish stocks, fishermen, and the coastal communities they support. Envisioning a data-driven future is at the heart of NGA’s work, beginning with our original 2017 report, “Improving Net Gains” and our newly updated vision.

Proposing a vision of what a better future could look like, and the specific steps that can help us get there
Building demand and inspiring others to take an active role in envisioning a data-driven future

Illustrating the positive impact of data modernization
Storytelling is a powerful way to make data modernization progress more concrete and accessible. NGA aims to identify and share the stories that help illustrate how data modernization creates positive impact by speaking with data system experts to gather these stories and develop a broader understanding of “impact” that all data modernization proponents can use to build support for their work. NGA published a full report, Communicating the Impact of a Data-Driven NMFS, in 2022.
